All editors have the same duty: to improve a manuscript without altering the writer’s voice or goals. The editor functions as the first reader, which means she looks for areas of the text that may annoy the intended audience or cast doubt on the author’s credibility.

Pricing depends on many factors. The Editorial Freelancers Association has a wonderful resource on editorial rates. Of course, depending on the project, rates vary considerably.
